Niton XL5 Plus XRF analyzer inspecting power plant piping for flow accelerated corrosion
Application Spotlight

Flow Accelerated Corrosion Inspection

FAC is a significant risk in nuclear and fossil-fuel power plants, where flowing water degrades carbon steel piping. Research has shown that material composition — principally chromium, copper and molybdenum — exerts the most influence on FAC rate.

The Niton XL5 Plus provides trace-level Cr, Cu and Mo detection in a compact handheld form factor. In testing against certified reference standards, agreement between laboratory results and XL5 Plus results achieved R² > 0.99 at a 15-second measurement time. The analyzer is capable of reliably detecting approximately 0.01% Cr in steel with appropriate sample preparation.
